If you are brand new to mixed martial arts, but are interesting in competing one day, it is important to break down a strategy or an approach for your training. Perhaps you’ve seen the UFC before, and have observed all the submission holds mixed with ground when the fight hits the floor.
Most would assume that to get good at this style of mixed martial arts, you should immediately jump right into full MMA, immediately trying to submit each other, or punch each other into oblivion.
This is definitely one approach, but it is an approach that can be fret with injury and frustration.
The word “mixed” in “mixed martial arts” indicates something complex. Mixing disciplines and tactics right away can be very difficult, as it almost creates a barrier to improving your skills in each of your individual disciplines first.
Let me give you an example; imagine you are stuck under the mount position, in one of these 2 scenarios:
- Your opponent is trying to submit you with chokes or armlocks
- Your opponent is trying to submit you with chokes or armlocks,
AND trying to punch and elbow you in the face.
If you are brand new to this sport….
Which do you think would be harder to escape from?
Most people would say number 2
Which do you think would cause more frustration?
Most people would say number 2
Which do you think could cause more injuries, and prevent you from reaching your goals sooner?
Most people would say number 2
The reason is pretty simple, if you can’t escape the mount position when someone IS NOT hitting you, do you think your chances will improve if THEY ARE hitting you?
Starting off simple and gradually adding complexity is the way to achieve a repeatable skill and understanding of any technique. Only once you have a good understanding of a basic move, do you add a variable, then another, and then another. Focusing your mixed martial arts training in this way will help you progress much faster with fewer injuries, and get you in the ring sooner.
So get started with your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training now!
Start by working on those basic escapes first.
- Mount
- Side Mount
- Guard Passing
Then, start working on dominating from each of those positions.
Then start working on escaping while being hit, and dominating while hitting.
Good luck, and good training!
